Biography
Johan Vilhelm Aubert (June 7, 1922 – July 19, 1988) was an influential Norwegian sociologist. He was a professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Oslo from 1963 to 1971 and at the Department of Sociology from 1971 to 1988. He co-founded the Norwegian Institute for Social Research in 1950 and has been labeled the 'father of Norwegian sociology'.
Achievements
Aubert earned his doctorate in 1954 and was a pioneer in social science research in Norway. He published significant works in the sociology of law, including 'Likhet og rett' and 'Rettssosiologi'. His textbook 'Sosiologi' was the authoritative introduction to sociology in Norway for many years.

Aubert was a member of the anti-Nazi resistance group XU during World War II. Despite his academic career, he maintained an active stance in politics, especially on nuclear disarmament issues, and served as editor of the newspaper 'Orientering'.
