Biography
Jean-Michel Atlan (January 23, 1913 – February 12, 1960) was a French artist of Algerian Jewish descent, born in Constantine. He moved to Paris in 1930 and studied philosophy at the Sorbonne. He started as a self-taught painter in 1941 and was arrested for his political activism and Jewish heritage in 1942. He published a slim volume of poetry in 1944 and had his first exhibition in 1946.
Achievements
Atlan joined the CoBrA art group in 1946, turning his studio into a meeting place in Paris. He exhibited at the Gallerie Carpenter in 1955 and is known for works such as 'Le Kahena' and 'Composition'. His work is characterized by a fusion of diverse influences and an innovative approach to painting.
