Biography
Friedrich Simon Archenhold (October 2, 1861, in Lichtenau, Kingdom of Prussia – October 14, 1939, in Berlin) was an astronomer who founded the Treptow Observatory (now Archenhold Observatory) in Berlin-Treptow. He graduated from the Realgymnasium in Lippstadt before entering Friedrich Wilhelm University in 1882.
Achievements
Archenhold was responsible for the construction of the world's longest moving refracting telescope, inaugurated on May 1, 1896. He also raised funds to replace the wooden structure of the observatory and attracted renowned scientists, such as Albert Einstein, who gave his first public lecture on the theory of relativity in 1915.
Fun facts
In 1938, the Nazi party confiscated Archenhold's home, and his family suffered persecution. The observatory was named in his honor in 1946, and his summer house in Bansin still stands, though in poor condition.
